Problem :

Google Pay dominates digital payments in India with UPI and QR codes, but it lacks a seamless Tap-to-Pay option. While the feature exists in Google Wallet, most users are unaware or unwilling to switch between two apps. This creates friction, slows down transactions, and limits awareness of NFC payments in India.

Solution :

Integrate Tap-to-Pay directly into Google Pay. Users can store debit/credit cards alongside UPI, select a card with a single tap, and pay instantly via NFC at supported terminals. This unified experience reduces confusion, speeds up in-store payments, and makes Google Pay a true all-in-one wallet for Indian users.

Most users want payments to be fast, simple, and unified. In India, mobile wallet adoption is extremely high, with over 90% of people using them in 2023. UPI is the most popular method, with around three-quarters of Indians preferring it for online shopping, and even in rural and semi-urban areas nearly 40% say it is their main way to pay. Small businesses and entrepreneurs are also reporting strong growth by adopting digital tools like UPI and smartphones.

All of this shows that people are ready for a simpler, more reliable payment experience. Instead of juggling multiple apps or struggling with QR codes, they want one trusted app that can handle UPI, cards, and tap-to-pay smoothly in any situation.

FINAL MOCKUPS :

Final mockups showcase a unified Tap-to-Pay experience inside Google Pay, with a card carousel and instant NFC payments. The design keeps transactions fast, intuitive, and user-friendly.
